2005-2009
In 2004, the second five-year work plan was developed for Lake Whatcom. This work plan included the same ten program areas as the 2000-2004 Work Plan, although the program area “watershed ownership” was renamed “land preservation”. In addition, another program area was included to capture activities associated with the administration of the joint management program. Specific priority was placed on activities related to stormwater management, land preservation, urbanization/land development, and community outreach.
In 2005, a particular emphasis was placed on addressing issues related to the sources and transport of phosphorus into Lake Whatcom. The growth of algae and other aquatic plants in Lake Whatcom, like most lake systems, is limited by the amount of phosphorus available to the lake. This relationship can also affect other aspects of the lake’s water quality.
The program was updated in 2006 (2006 Update of 2005-2009 Work Plan).
